Glad You Aren’t Here (2021)

Photographic installations and video projections.

As part of a solo exhibition in Harlesden High Street Gallery, I created photo installations in local shops. The photographs are from the errant eye of an errand running flaneuse. Looking up from her list, she glimpses a surface that is smaller and deeper than a well, and more dangerous to her if she fell in, so she returns to the business of crossing out names. They are printed and placed in shops to tempt other errand runners into daydreams.

Two videos played on a loop in the gallery space: one, “Seatbelt Serenade” (2021), wherein cars are slow baked and transformed into landscape by the same land that they transformed and baked, and second, “Make it a combo,” two men slowly fix a broken fast food drive-in sign. These videos played from sunset to midnight, a dream of a desert urban life during the grey months in Britain. The banal in one place becomes a scintillating dream in another by virtue of the twist of a knife.
